Speaking of feeds: I was dismayed when I couldn’t find a feed for the “Recommended Diaries” list on Daily Kos, until a dramafest this weekend convinced me I should stop following them so closely anyway.
On the 23rd, an execrable columnist named Dennis Prager wrote an article on Townhall.com entitled “When a Woman Isn’t In the Mood,” basically saying that when a man wants to have sex with his wife and she’s not digging it, she should consent anyway, because men (didn’t you hear?) are happier when they have more sex.
In essence, it’s not that far from Dan Savage’s maxim “good, giving, and game” — except Prager says nothing about communication (that would be “emasculating”), nothing about why a woman might not want to have sex with her husband in the first place, and the genders-reversed case is swept under the rug. In short, a truly awful and phallocentric piece of commentary.
How does the Daily Kos community respond? Someone writes a diary with the hyperbolic title “Dennis Prager Endorses Marital Rape”, setting off a 800+ comment firestorm.
Hours later another diarist with better reading comprehension writes a response, “No, Prager is NOT Advocating Marital Rape”, attracting another 800+ comments.
Finally a third diarist writes another reply, “The REAL Problem With Prager’s Remarks On Sex and Marriage”, arguing that the debate over the R-word has distracted everyone from discussing the sexism the author is actually guilty of. Third time’s the charm.
Meanwhile – actually, no, days earlier – the folks over at Alas, a Blog needed only one post to completely demolish the column. If you read any of these links, read that one.
