Quaker meeting fulla UUs

I’m going to my first Unitarian Universalist (UU) conference this weekend — WinterCon, for Boston-area young adult UUs. I’ll be facilitating a Quaker meeting in one of the workshop slots, at the kind request of one of the organizers, who came to a Quaker-inspired meditation I hosted in December. I’ll post an update on how it goes.

I haven’t written here about Quakers yet (at least not in depth), but to make a long story short, I’m interested in taking the good bits of wisdom from the Quaker tradition and carrying them forward into new contexts, and as much as possible leaving the bad bits behind. (Pretty much the same thing Sam Harris says about Buddhism.) Building bridges with our vowelly doppelgängers is an important part of that process…

Oh, and speaking of nontheistic Quakerism, John at Mind on Fire just did a fantastic job hosting the latest Carnival of the Godless

    Hi Zach,
I was one of the UU’s who attended your quaker meeting this past weekend. I just wanted to tell you again that it was wonderfully done and made me have a new appreciation of Friends. I’ve already looked up some meeting house’s in my area and plan on attending one soon. Thanks again for coming to our conference.

    Hey Zach –
Sorry I missed the Quaker meeting you facilitated this weekend…but I very much enjoyed the Jorge Regula action. Hope our paths cross ever again…
    Best – Hilary
